History of the Garden

Welcome to your Little Harbour School Garden Blog.  We hope that you enjoy your visit here to learn about different things that the garden has done and its plans for the future.  We also would like you to contribute to the blog on occasion to share your thoughts and experiences.

I thought I would share with you the brief history of our garden.

The LHS Garden was made possible by a grant that the school received from Lowes Corporation in May of 2010 along with the generosity of several local business' and the efforts of Little Harbor School volunteers.  The garden consists of 12 raised beds that have a total of 600 square feet of planting area.  The garden also has a hoop house that was built so that the planting season could be extended in the spring and fall.
The goals of this garden are to be self sustaining,  provide an educational environment and to supplement the fresh produce offering in the school cafeteria.

This will be the third planting season for the garden and the second season that the grades have been involved in planting the seeds and plants.  Last year we grew a lot of basil and were able to make pesto.  The year before we grew a lot of cucumbers and so we made pickles.

This year you are planting seeds that will give us some late season produce.  They include items such as squash, broccoli, cauliflower and potatoes.
