With the start of school also begins the harvest of the produce in the garden.  First, a BIG THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who helped water and weed the garden this summer.  Thanks to them, we have a lot of fresh produce this fall.

(l to r), helped pick the tomatoes and green peppers from the garden this past week.  As you can see, they were very successful.  Next week they will be cutting kale for kale chips.

Summer is upon us and the garden is beginning to produce.  The students had an opportunity to try fresh spinach and kale chips before school was over.

Due to the weather conditions the snap peas were not ready for picking.  But given the stretch of  warm weather we had last week, a lot of peas are now available.  If you would like some fresh peas and/or kale, please stop by the garden and take what you would like.

We are growing tomatoes, peppers, potatoes along with broccoli and cauliflower this summer.  They should be ready in time for school to start in August.

A big Thank You to all who signed up to help weed and water the garden this summer.

Lettuce Sale

 LITTLE HARBOUR LETTUCE SALE

On Friday, May 4th, students from the 4th Grade Team sold lettuce and rhubarb that had been picked from the school garden.  The lettuce had been planted by Ms. Marden's  3rd grade class in mid-March. 
 
The 4th Grade Team raised over $90 which will be put back into the garden fund. The LHS Garden is committed to continue being a self sustaining entity and we thank you for your support.  Thank you to all who purchased lettuce and rhubarb.  We will be having another sale soon.

Got a green thumb?

Well, the students at Little Harbour School do! At LHS, the third and fourth graders have been growing seeds. We have many different seeds that we have planted.  Herbs, flowers, and vegetables make a nice variety of things to plant!

      Do you like your food fresh?  Some of the veggies we grow will be served in the cafeteria.  When we get hot lunch, we can grab a healthy, fresh treat!

Don’t have time to grow your own veggies? Don’t worry! On Fridays, in late spring, over on the hot top after school, the 4^th graders will be selling fresh vegetables and flowers!  The money will go back into the garden

We have spent time growing and watering and caring for the plants and hope you enjoy them!

2nd Grade Planted Seeds Today

It was a great day for planting today with the temperature in the 50°s and sunny. And that is just what the students in Mrs. Cannon's, Mrs. Trudel's, Ms. Santa Maria's and Mrs. Albright's classes did.  They planted cole crop seeds in the garden.  Cole crop vegetables (not cold as I thought) are hardy and grow best in spring and fall.  Among these vegetables are broccoli, cauliflower and kale.  And those were some of the seeds planted today.  They also planted peas. Many of the plants have a harvest period of 60 days so the goal is to be able to share this  crop in the cafeteria before summer vacation begins.   Give a big hand to the second graders!!

Seed Planting Begins

Seed planting took place by the 3rd and 4th graders during March.  The 3rd grade planted several types of cold crops .  We should be able to harvest them  during the months of September and October when you come back from summer vacation.  It would allow the garden to share more of its produce in the cafeteria.  Some of the seeds that were planted include broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes and beans.  


The 4th grade planted herbs and pansy seeds this year.  The herbs included oregano, basil, cilantro and parsley.

Each class is taking responsibility for watering each of their seed flats.  The teachers have appointed a water wizard to oversee the watering.  This has worked extremely well and we will continue to use this approach.

After the danger of frost, we will begin putting the seedlings into the hoop house to get them used to the outdoors.  When the soil in the raised beds is warm enough, the second grade will begin to plant the seedlings.

In the meantime, we are going to begin planting some spinach, kale and snap peas and hope to have them available in the cafeteria by June!
